Russell Brand came on BBC's Newsnight and explained the reality of how the political system was exploitative and harming the common people. Now Russell is no great political pundit, nor is he some grand Islamic "scholar". But it doesn't take him that to stand for what is just and true.
Yet, if you look at our Muslim society, we are completely unable to even stand for this. We are too busy covering our own backsides, apologizing for x, y and z, and talking about the irrelevant, even the ridiculous. This brings us back to what Muhammad Abduh once said - "I went to the West and saw Islam, but no Muslims; I got back to the East and saw Muslims but not Islam".
We should really ask ourselves, can we not do any better than this?
