CAIRO- Sources suggest Coptic Christians played a key role in the recent massacre against the peaceful demonstrators in Egypt. A disproportionate number of Copts took part in the direct shooting and mass murder of protesters. This is fueling widespread anger against the Copts.
Copts have been living peacefully as a minority in Egypt but have increasingly been flexing their political muscle after decades of privilege during Hosni Mubarak's reign, who had seen them as a counter to Muslim Brotherhood. The recent ouster of democratically elected President Morsi also involved a direct and visible role by the Copts, who made up significant proportions of counter-revolutionary protesters that provided a cover for Sissi's coup.
