South Ossetia Blunder Could Risk All For US Central Asia Strategy

The South Ossetia conflict has taken center stage for US-Russia relations and for Russian relations with NATO. Assuming this is not a preplanned and calculated move by the US to tie Russia down, (and I believe it is not), we could see Russia reversing two decades worth of US policy in Central Asia. If Russia did not stop at South Ossetia, they could take over Georgia completely.

This would mean that the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, the second longest oil pipeline in the world, would have a new and unwelcome partner. Logistics to US bases and operations in Central Asia and Afghanistan (from the north) would also receive a major blow. It remains to be seen if Russia can in fact take advantage and play its cards right.
